From the thronging streets of Vietnam's capital Hanoi to the pristine sandy beaches of southern Thailand, Asia has plenty to offer travelers with a taste for adventure. According to the latest ITB World Travel Trends Report, Asia was a "star performer" in 2015/16 and more international tourists are set to visit in 2017. Singapore Changi Airport is one of the region's main transportation hubs, and if you're passing through, be sure to take advantage of its facilities. The Greater Mekong Sub-region is emerging as an increasingly popular tourism destination, with low-cost flights attracting visitors to places including Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and the Chinese provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi. Myanmar, formerly Burma, was singled out by ITB as a top pick. Tourists are in particular being drawn to the capital Yangon (Rangoon). Fly to Yangon International in order to explore the city's holy sites, restaurants, colonial-era architecture and buzzing street life.
Cuba
While it's too early to say in what direction newly-elected President Donald Trump may steer US-Cuba relations, improved communication between the two countries has helped put this island nation firmly in the sights of international travelers. Visitor numbers are set to boom in 2017, with people keen to explore Cuba ahead of potential sweeping changes that may alter the country forever. Visitors from the US, although technically still not allowed to travel as tourists, can legally enter Cuba for an educational visit. While there they're required to make an effort to meet Cuban citizens in everyday locations, such as schools and community centers.
Old Havana in the Cuban capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to beautiful architecture, classic American cars and countless bars offering rum, cigars and live music. Varadero is Cuba's largest resort destination, offering more than 20km of sun-drenched sand and the warm azure waters of the Caribbean. Take in the Viñales valley, known for its stunning mountain scenery, tobacco farms and relaxed pace of life. Further cultural experiences can be enjoyed in and around the picturesque town of Trinidad, another UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Canada
If it's adventure you've got your heart set on, then Canada could well be the place for you. Tipped as one of the year's must-visit destinations by the team at Lonely Planet, the country is celebrating 150 years since confederation and events have been scheduled to take place throughout 2017. Downtown Ottawa is where you want to be on July 1 when the country's capital will celebrate a Canada Day like no other.
Ready to get the adrenaline flowing? Consider a speedboat tour off the coast of Vancouver Island, whitewater rafting down the Kicking Horse River or a trip to the snow-covered beaches of Nova Scotia's coastline where hardy surfers head for the experience of a lifetime. Perhaps plan a trip to the remote town of Churchill in Canada's Manitoba province. It sits on the edge of Hudson Bay and is only accessible by train or plane. Plenty of nature lovers make their way here in the fall as Churchill lies right in the path of the world's largest annual polar bear migration. Just as remote is Canada's Yukon Territory in the north west of the country. Here you'll find twice as many moose as people, a sky that's awash with colour when the Northern Lights come out and spectacular mountain scenery.
Bermuda
Travel editors at the Daily Telegraph have picked out the island paradise that is Bermuda for their list of top 20 places to visit this year. Known for its sub-tropical climate, white beaches and crystal clear waters, Bermuda is a superb destination if relaxation is a priority. That said, 2017 will see the island host the 35th America’s Cup race and there'll be plenty happening in May and June when the historic sailing event comes to town.
Once you've spent enough time soaking up rays on the beach, be sure to experience life under the water. Spectacular diving and snorkeling opportunities are available, allowing you to make the most of Bermuda's coral reefs and colourful wildlife. The town of St. George's, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to L.F. Wade International Airport. Take time to explore its cobbled streets, before slipping into the Bermuda National Trust Museum to learn more about the island's history. Discover Bermuda's Crystal Caves, hire a bike and cycle the 18 mile-long Railway Trail or relax with a rum cocktail and some of the freshest seafood you're ever likely to eat.
South Africa
The Republic of South Africa, and Cape Point nature reserve in particular, is one of Forbes magazine's top budget destinations for 2017. Affordable flights, highly attractive exchange rates and an endless choice of stunning locations look set to make the country a big hit this year. Whether your idea of fun involves tracking an elephant through the scrub or tracking down a bargain in town, South Africa will delight at every turn.
Take a short drive from Cape Town International Airport to reach Table Mountain, the ferry port for Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned), the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront shopping complex and numerous museums, bars and restaurants. Head along the Garden Route to discover the beauty of the Robberg peninsula and find time to visit Cape Agulhas, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.
