Accessibility

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located approximately 13 miles (21 kilometres) south of downtown San Francisco in San Mateo County. You can access the airport in several ways:

By car
The airport is well connected to major highways, including US-101 and I-280. This makes it easily accessible from various directions. Several parking options are made available for visitors, including short-term, long-term, and valet parking. Be aware that some parking areas may require a reservation, especially during peak travel times.

Taxis
San Francisco taxis are yellow. You can find them at taxi stands located at:

  • International Terminal A: Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level
  • International Terminal G: Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level
  • Terminal 2: Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level
  • Terminal 3: Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level

It costs around $45-$65 to travel from the airport to downtown San Francisco, depending on traffic.

Ride-sharing services
For drop-offs, Uber and Lyft drivers can drop passengers off curbside at the departure level of any terminal, ensuring easy access to the check-in counters and security checkpoints. Book your ride-sharing transport via the relevant app. During peak hours, there may be a higher demand for ride-sharing services, so plan accordingly.

Bay Area Rapid Transport (BART)
The Bay Area Rapid Transport, known as BART, trains run every 15 minutes. BART is the best way to avoid sitting in the Bay Area traffic. The station is located on the Departures/Ticketing Level of the International Terminal (Boarding Area G side), a short walk from Terminals 1 and 3. It takes approximately 30 minutes to journey to downtown San Francisco via BART. You can access BART from any terminal by riding the AirTrain to the Garage G/BART Station stop.

By airport shuttle
Various shared-ride vans and private shuttles operate from San Francisco Airport, offering door-to-door service. You can book their services in advance or upon arrival.

Barrier-Free service
Passengers with limited mobility caused by physical or mental disability (sensory or locomotion, permanent or temporary), advanced age, or any other cause receive special attention via barrier-free services.

The barrier-free services provide comprehensive assistance, including wheelchair services, accessible restrooms, and TTY phones. More information can be found here.

Parking
San Francisco Airport offers several parking options for cars and motorbikes. Specifically:
  • Domestic Parking Garage
  • International Parking Garages A and G
  • Long-Term Parking
  • ParkFAST and ParkVALET services

Be aware that you need to book a parking space to guarantee availability before driving in. For travellers interested in long-term parking, a shuttle service that runs every 5-15 minutes connects the long-term parking lot to all terminals.

Travelling between terminals
The most effective way to travel between terminals is by AirTrain, a free automated people-moving system that operates 24/7.

AirTrain connects all terminals, parking garages, the BART station, and the Rental Car Centre and runs roughly every 5 minutes.
